Rockbridge teacher denied bond in juvenile sexual assault case

Posted: Updated:

A Rockbridge County general district court judge denied bond for Greg Staton, the suspended Rockbridge County high school teacher accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl earlier this month in Florida.

Staton's extradition hearing is scheduled for July 31st.

Staton had a couple of family members tell the judge he wouldn't be a flight risk if released on a $75,000 bond, a bond recommended by prosecutors in Florida.

The judge however determined that granting Staton bail would be too great of a risk.

A spokesman for the Santa Rosa County sheriff's office in Florida said investigators believe Staton fled home to Fairfield in Rockbridge County after learning he was wanted for questioning in the suspected sexual assault.

Staton told the judge he received a text message from a family member about the situation with the girl, but claimed he left having no idea authorities in Florida wanted to talk to him.

Staton can appeal the decision to Rockbridge County Circuit Court.
