Roanoke revamps parks and recreation master plan

Posted: Updated:

Roanoke City is getting greener.

A new master five-year plan was presented before the Roanoke planning commission.

Parks and recreation director Steven Buschor says the new changes are based on surveys which show that the people of Roanoke want more parks, more gardens and more outdoors period.

He says the new plan will aim to improve at least two city parks each year which includes expansion on walking trails, especially at Mill Mountain Park.

Mark Powell, the director of the Roanoke Community Garden Association praises the city for the new plan.

"I'm excited for the first time in the cities history the parks and recreation master plan includes food and agriculture," Powell said.

The potential to expand urban gardening is what really has Powell excited.

"The statistics say that about 15 percent of the food is grown in urban areas globally. But about 50 percent of the people live in urban areas," Powell said. "So maybe we can bring food a little closer to the population.
