Roanoke police officer pulls woman from flood stuck car

Posted: Updated:

A Roanoke city police officer pulled a woman out of a car that was stuck in flash flood waters near the corner of Hershberger Road and Ferncliff Drive Wednesday afternoon.

Officer J.A. Johnson said he noticed people running and pointing in the direction of the car, cueing him into the fact something was wrong.

He said he decided not to wait on a swift water rescue team since the flood waters were rising.

Johnson said the water was high enough to almost reach the gun belt around his waist.

"I held her hand and part of her arm," the officer said.  "We hit a few curbs and almost went under but she was fine."

Emergency workers tell drivers not to venture into flood waters since they might get trapped, putting their lives, and the lives of the emergency workers, in danger.
