Petition of abortion legislation delivered to McCrory

RALEIGH, N.C. -

About a dozen people rallied at the state Capitol Thursday to deliver a petition to the governor's office.

More the 10,000 signatures are urging Gov. Pat McCrory to veto legislation that puts extra regulations in place on abortions and abortion clinics.

"The petition has almost been a sounding board for people to just voice what is really going on with them and what's going on in the state," said Shawn Trimble, of Durham, who started the petition. "I really hope that he looks at it and he looks at the comments, and he takes us seriously, because we're not going away."

McCrory has threatened to veto the bill if the Senate's version landed on his desk. However on Wednesday, members of the House Judiciary Committee voted 10-5 along party lines to change the bill to satisfy McCrory's concerns.

The so-called abortion bill passed the House Thursday with a 74-41 vote. It now returns to the Senate, who must approve changes made in the House committee.

Petitioners are also upset with cuts to unemployment benefits, voter ID legislation and education.

McCrory's office said neither the governor nor his staff was available, and that officers would take the petition to them.
