Historic Oliver Hill house now home to mentoring program

Posted: Updated:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Virginia is teaming with local attorneys and law enforcement to make a real difference in the lives of dozens of school children.

The groups are also using the historic Oliver Hill home on Gilmer Avenue to do it.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is using the house as a the center piece for a new after-school mentoring program.

Four dozen kids from four different Roanoke city elementary schools will take part.

The program will be open to twelve kids, four days per week.

It's taking kids now since the RCPS Plus program recently opened, a first of its kind summer school program for Roanoke city schools.

"[The participating students] will get tutoring.  They will be doing fun activities.  There will be field trips.  Their big brother or big sister will meet with them," explained June House, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Virginia president and CEO.

Oliver Hill, a longtime civil rights leader, was born in Richmond in 1907.

His family moved for a time to Roanoke and lived on Gilmer Avenue.

The Oliver Hill Foundation owns the home.

House also said the program is in dire need of volunteers, especially starting this fall.
