Roanoke 'Raps for a Reason'

Posted: Updated:

Roanoke is rapping for a reason. Stereotypically a genre of music that gets a negative association, Brandon Johnson, a Roanoke native is changing that around.

"I want to use music to shape our youth and teach them the skills that they need to make it in this world," Johson said.

Johnson is the Rap4AReason event coordinator. Saturday he and his team of local rap artists were doing what they do best at Eureka Park.

Johnson says that his group strives to use music, art, performance, fashion, and other urban culture, as a positive source to inspire and support local youth, and address issues within the community.

He hopes to send a positive message about education and raise awareness about AIDS, poverty, child abuse, peer pressure.

Saturday he was laying down beats to raise money for school supplies for the children who go to the after school and summer tutoring programs at the Eureka center; a place Johnson believes is impacting the community he grew up in.

He is collecting school supplies like book bags, pencils, paper, notebooks, and binders for the inner city youth for the upcoming school year.
