Flooding means extra work for crews at Smith Mountain Lake.
Appalachian Power (APCo) typically clears 400 tons a year on a high year. This year because of heavy rain the company has pulled more than 1,500 tons of debris from the lake.
The week of the July 4th storms created 100 tons alone. Normally, one skimmer is enough to clear both ends of the lake but because of all of the heavy rainfall they have had to hire contractors to help out with clearing debris
