Local business and community leaders are taking steps to press the federal government to unfreeze a customs and border patrol position that oversees the Roanoke and New River valleys.
The New River Valley Economic Development Alliance is asking nearly two dozen local town councils, city councils, and boards of supervisors to pass resolutions in support of hiring a new customs agent.
The NRV alliance's president said the former customs agent retired and has not been replaced.
The alliance's position is that the hiring freeze on the position makes it harder for the business community to receive international shipments to airports at Virginia Tech, Roanoke, and Dublin since there is no customs agent to check them.
A sign on the door of the customs office at the New River Valley airport in Dublin says to call Richmond if you need assistance.
