Salem Fair attendance estimated at 300,000

SALEM, VA -

More than a week's worth of rain couldn't stop hundreds of thousands of people from going out to enjoy the Salem Fair.

Salem Fair Manager, and Director of Civic Facilities Carey Harveycutter estimated late Monday afternoon that more than 300,000 people went through the fair's gates during its 12 day run.

Harveycutter added that the fair saw attendance increases year-over-year on eight nights.

"There's no doubt, we had our share of rain, but on the days when the sun was out, fairgoers more than made up for any losses due to wet weather," noted Harveycutter in a news release.  "In fact, we set records on two different days of the fair this summer."

The biggest day attendance wise turned out to be July 6th.  It set a fair record for money taken in for rides year-over-year, surging 51%.  In 2012, the fair battled the effects of the derecho that knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people across Southwest Virginia.  The extreme heat was also a factor in 2012.

"The rain was a factor on at least five days, but the fairgoers showed us that they would rather get a little wet than deal with the stifling heatwave we had last year," Harveycutter stated.
