NC conducts study of attitudes toward hurricanes

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

With the Atlantic hurricane season under way, officials in North Carolina want to know what coastal residents would do if asked to evacuate.

The N.C. Department of Public Safety says emergency management officials are examining behaviors and attitudes regarding evacuations during hurricanes. For the next month, calls will be made to hundreds of coastal residents to gather information

Each call will last 15 to 20 minutes and residents will be asked about their past behavior during an evacuation, expected plan if there is one in the future and perceived vulnerability to hurricanes and storm surge.

The study is being conducted for N.C. Emergency Management and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District.
