Abortion bill impacting McCrory, GOP's approval ratings

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Raleigh-based polling operation Public Policy Polling just released the numbers from their most recent survey of North Carolina voters and the news isn't good for Gov. Pat McCrory and the GOP.

The polling company found that McCrory now has his lowest approval rating since taking office at 40 percent, which is down 15 points from June. His disapproval rating is 49 percent.

According to the poll, only 68 percent of people who voted for McCrory still approve of the job he's doing.

The approval rating for the job Republicans have done running the state government is only at 35 percent, with 55 percent of voters disapproving.

The sudden drop in the approval ratings for McCrory and the GOP may coincide with the unhappiness voters have expressed over the abortion bill and the transparency of the state government.

Just 34 percent of voters support the proposal, with 47 percent who are opposed. Voters, by a wide margin, disapprove of the process with 80 percent who think it's inappropriate to combine abortion legislation with bills about motorcycle safety or Sharia Law, PPP said.

When it comes to government transparency, the General Assembly's numbers are also low. Only 19 percent think the General Assembly is transparent in how it conducts its business. A majority, 51 percent, believe business is not being conducting transparently. North Carolinians think by a 48-33 margin that the governor should veto the abortion law.

Democrats lead the generic legislative ballot 51-42, in what PPP says is the largest lead they've ever found for the question since they started tracking the statistic.

Another interesting statistic provided by PPP is that voters have a higher opinion of Moral Monday protestors than they do the General Assembly by a 47-41 margin. Voters also believe by a 46-36 margin that the General Assembly is causing the state "national embarrassment."
