Pulaski makes plan to bring in more business

Posted: Updated:

The town of Pulaski is planning to capitalize on interstate 81 traffic by developing businesses along the Route 99 corridor.

Over 90 percent of Route 99 is located within 3-miles of I-81's Exit 94 interchange. According to the New River Valley Planning Commission gas, food, and lodging facilities within 3-miles of the interstate are eligible to participate in the Virginia Logo Signing Program.

Now the town of Pulaski hopes to build up to businesses around Exit 94 to capitalize on those opportunities.

In a report the commission prepared for the town council of Pulaski, they say that nearly 40,000 vehicles pass by Exit 94 and local businesses each day.

Staff from the New River Valley Planning Commission addressed a plan to the town council Tuesday night that focused on areas from the I-81 exit 94 to the three mile distance from I-81 for I-81 sign age.

Their planning shows different development scenarios for four quadrants including the existing shopping centers and also for development at the exit 94/old Route 100 area.

John Hawley, the town manger for Pulaski says they hope to address some of the issues that the exit faces in regards to attracting travelers as well as local loss in economy.

"If you look at the exit it hasn't developed a whole lot for several reasons, terrain, the cloverleaf patterns on the exit ramps, "Hawley said. "It only has public water - it has no public sewer to the locations."

Hawley said that building a sewage treatment facility could be a possibility in the future.

WSLS will continue to follow this story and keep you updated as the plan is put into action.
