More data shows NC lags behind in teacher pay

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

A graphic laying out nationwide disparities in teacher salaries is making the rounds online, and it's not good news for North Carolina.

It's a listing of teacher pay changes in the last decade and our state comes in last.

Raleigh public school teacher Erica Speaks put together the graphic using data from the National Education Association. It shows Wyoming and Washington, D.C. With the highest increases in pay after inflation, but it has North Carolina at 51 on the list, dead last, with teachers actually making less money after inflation.

North Carolina has not raised teacher salaries in five years. Millbrook Elementary School teacher Elizabeth Whisenant says the lack of extra pay has hit her family so hard she's considering changing careers.

"It's just... I can't stay. My morale has dropped tremendously," Whisenant said. "I think that if they valued us and they valued our profession more, that they would see that this is impacting us hard."

Gov. Pat McCrory's budget proposal did include a one percent pay increase for teachers, but other versions of the budget from the General Assembly removed that increase.

Lawmakers are still working on a budget deal.
