Poll shows Hagan with lead over GOP Senate rivals

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

A recent Public Policy Poll has Democratic incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan in the lead over potential Republican challengers, including North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis.

PPP said voters have mixed feelings about Hagan overall, with 43 percent approving to 45 percent disapproving of her work so far in the U.S. Senate. Hagan is up for re-election in 2014 and Republicans believe that is a seat they can take from the Democrats.

But the Raleigh-based polling outfit gives her double-digit leads over eight potential Republican opponents, an improvement from the numbers she's posted over the last couple months.

PPP puts Hagan up 10 points on North Carolina Senate leader Phil Berger and on Greg Brannon at 49/39, 11 on House Speaker Thom Tillis at 49/38, 12 on Virginia Foxx at 49/37, 13 on Jim Cain and Renee Ellmers at 49/36.

As for the Republican field, Publicy Policy Polling said 16 percent of those who responded said their top choice would be Virginia Foxx, 11 percent each pick Berger, Cain, and Ellmers, 7 percent pick Brannon, 5 percent pick.
