For a while, it looked like the college football world was going to be upended in the first week of play, but it all worked out according to plan in the end.

Perhaps it was the fact that Alabama's new offensive coordinator was coaching from the sideline. Perhaps it was that screen grab with less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter that went viral.

Blake Sims was good enough to finish his first start at quarterback for Alabama, getting plenty of help from Amari Cooper, T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry, and the second-ranked Crimson Tide held off West Virginia...
Blake Sims took a seat on the bench next to Jake Coker after leading Alabama to a score and the two chatted for a few minutes before it was time for the offense to go back on the field.

HOOVER, AL (RNN) - The 13th annual SEC Media Days concludes Thursday with appearances by LSU, Georgia, Alabama and Vanderbilt.

It's bound to an improvement over Wednesday, which peaked shortly after breakfast when Texas A&M quarterback and bon vivant Johnny Manziel stepped into the vortex of the media Sharknado and told the third variant of his story on why he missed practice at Manning Passing Camp.

This time, he claimed that he overslept because his phone died. Earlier the story was that he was "dehydrated." The word around the campfire was that he was hung over after a long night on the bayou in Thibodaux, LA, which he flatly denied.

Manziel's new story paves the way for Thursday when we can ask Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, Manziel's roommate at the camp, why he didn't wake Manziel up – or shave his eyebrows and put his hand in a bowl of warm water. Depending on whom you believe.

Arkansas' Bret Bielema was a breath of fast-talking, booming-voiced fresh air. He got mad when he found out Gus Malzahn said he thought it was a joke when he first heard Bielema had said hurry-up offenses were dangerous.

He called out a reporter for sleeping in the front row, and he challenged the media voting in the preseason poll to "vote us low and see what happens."

Oh, and circle the Nov. 2 game between Arkansas and Auburn.

First thing Thursday, LSU's Les Miles is sure to hold forth on why he doesn't want to have to play Florida every year, and Lord knows what else.

Nick Saban will be grumpy, Mark Richt will be cool and courteous, and Vanderbilt's James Franklin will have his deflector shields up for questions about the four players suspended in the wake of an alleged sex crime.

Les Miles will take the podium at 8:30 a.m. CT. LSU players joining him will be Jarvis Landry, Craig Loston and Zach Mettenberger.

Georgia will follow with Coach Mark Richt and players Arthur Lynch, Aaron Murray, and Garrison Smith.

The next round will be from 11:20 a.m. to 2 p.m. Alabama coach Nick Saban and the players will be AJ McCarron, C.J. Mosley and Anthony Steen.

Vanderbilt wraps up SEC Media Days with Coach James Franklin and players Andre Hal, Wesley Johnson and Jordan Matthews.
