AVERY COUNTY, NC (WJHL) -

News Channel 11 continues to monitor the dangers and impact of a landslide that's wiped out an Avery County lifeline.

The North Carolina community is trying to comprehend the fallout from such devastation. Those living just below, woke Monday night to the horrifying site of a landslide pummeling toward their home. Two days later, crews are gone - and only caution cones remain.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation tells us at this time, there's nothing anyone can do except monitor the situation as more rain approaches. NC DOT will be accepting bids for contractors in what is called a highly complicated project.

Among locals out to get a look at the damage first hand, was County Commissioner Glenn Johnson.

"Certainly it's an economic impact, I would think particularly on Newland. This is a 3-way, many people use it as a connector between Interstate 40 and Interstate 81. A lot of trucks roll through here, and of course they're not allowing trucks at the present time through the old Blevins Creek Road. It's very crooked, and they're urging all non-local traffic to either travel 19E or go by 194 by Banner Elk," Johnson said.

NC DOT tells News Channel 11 once a contractor is chosen, the project is estimated to take two to three months.
