Roanoke River Flood Reduction Project performing up to expectations

Posted: Updated:

Without the Roanoke River Flood Reduction Project, city leaders firmly believe they never would've been able to pull off the annual Independence Day fireworks show because the River's Edge area would've been underwater.

"I think the flood reduction project really served us well during the rains we had [late on July 3rd and early on July 4th]," explained Roanoke city engineer Phil Schirmer.

The project took years to complete, and cost millions in taxpayer dollars, but city leaders said the facts clearly show that it's living up to expectations.

Schirmer said the city considered the July 3-4 flooding event a 25 year storm.

The Roanoke River crested at 14.5 feet, Schirmer explained.

The flood reduction project is designed to take a 30 year storm, Schirmer said.

He said areas that normally would've flooded before the project did not following the July 3-4 event.

Schirmer said the city suffered damage to a couple of bridges on the greenway, but that was about it.
