ROANOKE, VA -

Internet customers of Cox Communications in the Roanoke Valley may have noticed their favorite songs, shows, and videos download a bit faster this week.

The company said Wednesday that it had 'flipped the switch' on its upgrade of internet network in the area.  The $4.6 million project boosted standard internet speeds across all tiers Cox offers.

  • Cox's lowest tier, its "Essential" category, increased speed to 5 Mbps (Megabytes per second) download/1 Mbps upload, from 3 Mbps download/768 Kbps (kilobytes per second) upload.
  • The "Preferred" tier increased to 25 Mbps download/5 Mbps upload, from 10 Mbps download/1 Mbps upload.
  • The "Premier D2" tier is now 25 Mbps download/3 Mbps upload, from 15 Mbps download/1.5 Mbps upload.
  • The "Premier D3" tier moves to up 50 Mbps download/10 Mbps upload, from 15 Mbps download/1.5 Mbps upload.
  • Cox's "Ultimate" tier is also now available, promising download speeds of 100 Mbps and upload speed of 20 Mbps.

"Our customers tell us that speed matters," stated Kim Stanley, Market Vice President, Roanoke Operations, in a news release.  "Higher internet speeds are especially important in today's connected world where more and more devices are connected through their WiFi network throughout their home.  And we will continue to invest in our network to bring our customers the best online experience possible."
