Chasm in Avery County, NC. highway continues to grow

AVERY COUNTY, NC (WJHL) -

More rain created more problems for Avery County's Highway 194. On Wednesday, the landslide had only claimed half of the roadway. Friday, even more is gone.

The road is completely caved in from one shoulder to the other, across all three lanes.

Some of the residents that lost their homes during the initial landslide, returned Friday looking to salvage what they could.

They give a horrifying account of what happened when the road above them gave way.

According to Robbie Bailey, whose home was destroyed by the landslide, "Well first I saw a big flash of light and when I seen that I went to hearing rocks and stuff falling. So I went to hollering for my wife to run. She ran toward the front door and grabbed Emma our youngest daughter. When she got her, it just hit the trailer and completely collapsed it."

Bailey says he doesn't know what the state is prepared to do about his home. He also lost three cars, and three horses when the roadway collapsed.
