ROANOKE -

Hundreds of athletes poured into the Roanoke Civic Center getting geared up to kick-off one of the biggest weekends for the Commonwealth Games of Virginia.

The games attract players from all over some from West Virginia, North Carolina, even Kentucky.

Beth Doughty, the Executive Director for the Roanoke Regional Partnership,  says events like this give the valley big exposure.

Six-thousand athletes are expected to attend, with more than half coming from out of the area.

"People travel from all over the state to participate and most of them come with family and the money they spend in hotels and restaurants and entertainment really has an economic impact," Beth Doughty, the Executive Director Roanoke Regional Partnership, says.

She says that impact doesn't just extend to Roanoke, but spreads across the region.

"it's not all centered on downtown, not all centered in city of Salem. It's really across the whole region," Doughty says. "So, it's nice to spread the benefit and the wealth."

With the overall goal. being to give families a reason to come back time and time again.
