Raleigh couple says child abuse charges are a 'misunderstanding'

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Raleigh police arrested Serge and Cassandra Germain on Friday, charging them with misdemeanor child abuse. The couple spoke to WNCN on Saturday explaining that their 6 year old son, Adoni, told one of his program mentors that his parents locked him up in the basement and withheld food from him.

They believe that was why police unexpectedly showed up at their door Friday.

Serge and Cassandra Germain said it all started when Adoni, didn't want to go to school one day and lashed out at his parents for making him. Serge said this isn't the first time Adoni has lied. He believes his 6 year old step-son might have a mental disorder.

WNCN asked the 6 year old if his parents really did lock him up. He said "no" and explained he lied because he was "mad at his father for making him go to school".

The couple, however, does have a criminal history. Cassandra said she was once charged with child neglect a few years ago, and Serge said he was charged once for verbal assault against a police officer and also possession of drugs with intent to sell.

Now the family is worried that the Department of Social Services might take action in light of their recent arrests. Cassandra said, "The only thing I care about is that nobody takes my kids away."

The couple will know more on Monday when they meet with DSS.

The couple explained that a few months ago they reached out to social services to get help with their 6 year old son and showed us the copy of the DSS assessment. There were no warning signs of abuse or neglect on the review.

The couple bonded out on $5,000.
