Hundreds protest Trayvon Martin case in downtown Roanoke

Posted: Updated:
Several hundred people in Roanoke gathered in a peaceful protest just one week after a Florida jury acquitted George Zimmerman in the shooting death of the unarmed teen Trayvon Martin.

The protest that started with just two people quickly grew into a throng of outraged Virginians, carrying signs that showed their disgust with the outcome of the case.

Samaria Pope, 29 and Maricca Penn, 30 both of Roanoke, were inspired to organize the city-wide event "Justice for All Rally."

Pope who is a mother of four and department of health worker says her initial reaction was "shock" when she learned of Saturday's verdict.

"I was heartbroken by the decision," she said. "As a mother, I feel it could have easily been my son or my brother."

She and Penn have started a community organization called "One Accord 4 Justice." The organization's goal is to create awareness and bring change to the Roanoke Valley by taking a stand against violence.

As the protestors walked through the downtown of Roanoke they chanted "justice for all" in unison.

Police stopped traffic as the protestors walked by, silencing all other downtown sounds.

Roanoke joins more than 200 cities across the nation Saturday in efforts to convict Zimmerman,a neighborhood watch volunteer, for killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in February 2012.

The march began at MLK Memorial Bridge in Roanoke and ended at the Poff Federal Building where the group rallied together in unison, demanding justice for all across the United States and around the world.
