Vinton Farmers Market opens shop for SNAP/EBT customers

Posted: Updated:

The Vinton Farmers Market is reaching out to draw more people to fresh, healthy locally grown fruits and vegetables.

"We want more families to be able to enjoy healthy produce," Mary Beth Layman, Town of Vinton Special Programs Coordinator said.

It's a new initiative by the Vinton Area Chamber of Commerce to educate people about the health benefits of eating locally grown food, teach new recipes and shop local artisan vendors.

Saturday marks the first official day that the Vinton Farmers Market is offering shopping options for customers who qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

Not only is this a new option for SNAP customers, they can actually double their money by shopping at the farmers market.

"We match shoppers dollar for dollar up to ten dollars," Layman said.

Layman said that the program went off without any issue Saturday.

The new program allows for SNAP and credit card users to purchase tokens from the market.

Tokens are treated as cash and can be used with any vendor at the market.

Layman says they're seeing more families sign up as a result which translates to more families purchasing and preparing healthy foods for their families using snap benefits. "We are very, very pleased with today's outcome," Layman said.

The program also brings more customers in who will buy from more vendors. Layman says this will be benefical for local vendors as well.
