DURHAM, N.C. -

The North Carolina Highway Patrol says a short pursuit ended with a car crashing into a tree Saturday night in Durham.

Jeremy Reshad Spencer and Shavonte Cousins were transported to Duke Medical Center after Spencer crashed his vehicle into a tree new Duke and Leon Streets shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday.

Troopers were conducting a drivers license checkpoint on Roxboro Street when a 2013 Buick LaCross abruptly made a u-turn before reaching the checkpoint around 8:51 p.m.

Troopers pursued the vehicle, but shortly before 9 p.m., Spencer lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree on the left shoulder near Duke and Leon Streets.

It is unclear at this time as to why the driver evaded the checkpoint.

The investigation is on-going and charges are pending.
