Virginia Tech adds free bike repair stations

Posted: Updated:

Nearly 30,000 students are expected on Virginia Tech's campus this upcoming year and now more than ever many Hokies will be traveling by bike.

"Cycling has definitely grown a lot on campus in the past few years. We are putting out more bike racks, trying to get more facilities for cyclists. You definitely see more cyclists on the streets than what you would have in the past," said Kathryn Zeringue the Alternative Transportation Coordinator.

As campus continues to expand Zeringue says its becomes a necessity for many students and employees to travel by bike.

She says the university is doing its part to accommodate the biking trend with the newest addition being a "fix it" station that brings the emergency biker kit one step closer to the rider.

"Here within the stand there are several tools and allen wrenches that you can do basic maintenance to your bike like adjusting your brakes and your derailers," said Zeringue.

You can even fix a flat. It's all free.

Not only are the stations convenient they are also a part of the going green initiative which is how the school received the grant to purchase them.

"I actually applied for the grant using the office of sustainability green RFP which is a new initiative the that office of sustainability office has put in place so that students can apply to see more environmentally friendly initiative on campus," said Nneka Sobers, a VT intern. "By giving them access to easier ways to just fix their tire or just fix their brakes it will prevent future accidents."
