Many of you park in downtown Roanoke every day.
It turns out maintaining those city lots and garages you park in isn't cheap.
Maintenance and operations costs are more than $1.7 million per year for the city's 12 parking garages and lots.
That comes out to $443 per space and some of that cost is tied to drivers littering.
"Americans sometimes will dump out a coffee and not think of another thing about it," said Debbie Moses, who is the parking administrator with the city of Roanoke. "In reality it's another function we have to do, scrub that up and keep that clean so that people have attractive place to park and they feel safe in that place."
The garages are self-sustaining, meaning no taxpayer dollars go into operations or maintenance.
However, Moses said parking costs could be lower if fewer people littered in the garages and lots.
