SALEM, VA -

Kroger helps make a difference for the hungry in the Roanoke region.

The grocery store chain donated $53,479.56 to Feeding America Southwest Virginia on Monday.

The money came from two donation campaigns Kroger ran this year:

Feed the Need - Raised $31,141.90 from stores at Smith Mountain Lake to Bristol

Bringing Hope to the Table - $22,337.66 as part of an overall national program

"Kroger's donation will provide nearly a quarter of a million meals to those in need of food in Southwest Virginia," said Pamela Irvine, CEO of Feeding America SWVA.  "Without help from the community and wonderful supporters such as Kroger and their customers, we could see a reduction in the amount of food to our partner feeding agencies.  I would like to thank Kroger on behalf of the residents in our service area."

"We're proud to play a role in helping the less fortunate and making our communities better places to live," said Valerie Jabbar, Kroger vice-president, and member of the board of directors for Feeding America SWVA.
