No football for one Glenvar little league age group

SALEM, VA -

As we get closer to fall, many people are already starting to think about football season, but for one Glenvar little league team, that won't be a possibility this year.

"There's not going to be a junior team this year," says Scott Wolk, the Glenvar Youth Booster's football coordinator. He says the GYB was forced to make the decision when only six boys in the 11-13 age group signed up to play. This is the first time in at least seven years that an entire age group hasn't had enough kids to form a team.

"It can be discouraging," says Glenvar High School's head football coach Kevin Clifford. "If you've played your whole life, then don't get to play, it is discouraging."

It's something that could also affect other programs in the future.

Wolk says it's important that the kids begin learning the game at a young age, to keep them from having to be retrained when they get to middle and high school.

"It's a time of their life where it's getting important for them to be playing," says Jeff Loder, whose son is one of the kids not able to play this year.

Coach Clifford says as football season kicks off, the program is doing everything they can to keep this age group interested.

"The biggest thing is keeping them active and involved in some sort of form or fashion," says Clifford.

The GYB says it is trying to work with other area programs in an effort to keep these boys playing football.
