Roanoke nominated for best trail, beer town

ROANOKE -

Roanoke needs your help if it wants to be named one of the best town's in the Mid-Atlantic.

Blue Ridge Magazine nominated Roanoke for two categories in its 2nd annual poll, Best Trail Town and Best Beer Town.

Since there are more than 1,000 miles of trails within a one hour radius of the Star City, being nominated for Best Trail Town came as no surprise to Roanoke's Director of Outdoor Branding Pete Eshelman.

But the Best Beer Town nomination was unexpected.

"It's a welcome surprise," Eshelman said. "I think we are in the beginning phases of really developing our beer culture here and our wine culture. Parkway Brewery has opened up, Flying Mouse is about to open up."

Until Virginia's Brewery Law took affect in July 2012, Roanoke Railhouse was the only brewery in the Roanoke Valley.

Lynchburg is also nominated for Best River Town.
