The long discussed intermodal feasibility study is set to begin in September in Montgomery County.
The $200,000 study will focus on demand, transportation, and economic impacts of building an intermodal facility, which will be in Elliston.
Wayne Strickland with the Roanoke Valley Alleghany Regional Commission said the study is needed.
"It will show demand, it will show potential," he said. "Our hope is that it will help encourage Norfolk Southern to move forward with development of the intermodal facility."
Strickland said they are aiming to complete the study by April 2014.
