UVA creates task force following Social Security numbers mistake

Posted: Updated:

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - The University of Virginia's policies and procedures will be reviewed by a task force to ensure the personal information of students and staff is protected.

The move follows the accidental printing of address labels containing students' Social Security numbers. The labels were on health insurance brochures sent to students by Aetna Health Care.

Media outlets reported that U.Va. President Teresa Sullivan announced the task force's creation Monday in a letter to students and staff.

"We regret that this happened, and I want to assure you that the university is taking immediate steps to mitigate the situation and to prevent a recurrence," Sullivan wrote. "The protection of personal information of students, faculty and staff is a top priority."

The task force will be chaired by Pat Hogan, the university's executive vice president and chief operating officer. The Office of General Counsel will serve in an advisory role, Sullivan said.

Aetna Health Care sent the open-enrollment brochures to students' homes through a third-party mail vendor. The university provided the Social Security numbers and other information to Aetna, which provides student health insurance at U.Va. and more than 190 other schools across the nation.

The university has offered affected students a year of free credit counseling.
