Muddy Squirrel ready to give students, families adventure education

Posted: Updated:

As part of their ongoing push to make the Roanoke Valley an outdoor destination, local leaders are encouraging entrepreneurs to open outdoors related businesses here in the region.  Two teachers recently answered that call.

Tim Miller and Lisa Moyer describe their business "Muddy Squirrel" as "adventure education", designed for people who want to enjoy the outdoors but aren't sure where to start or how to do it.

They say they were inspired by some of the work they did as teachers, where they would take students into the outdoors to give them a better understanding of nature and teach them critical thinking skills.

Muddy Squirrel offers a variety of day courses and overnight trips that have been pre-scheduled so customers can sign up for whichever activities interest them.  It then provides the gear, the locations, and the know how in hopes that customers will walk away knowing enough to take their next adventures on their own.

"I'm out [in the outdoors] a lot and it's just a place where I feel at home," said Miller.  "And I want to share that home feeling with everybody else who might ever have the idea, 'hey I'd like to try that sometime.'  And I want to help them do that."

At first, Miller and Moyer thought they'd work primarily with school and student groups -- but based on the early response they've received, they've already created several programs for families and adults.

"It's already going in directions a lot further than we thought," said Moyer.  "We're really excited about the possibilities."
