Appalachian Power website shows Claytor Lake Dam water release impact

Posted: Updated:
PULASKI COUNTY, VA -

Appalachian Power wants to help swimmers, fishermen, and boaters on the New River be aware of changes when it releases water from the Claytor Lake Dam.

APCo's website now includes a downstream flow tool for the New River at http://AEP.com/NewRiverFlows

The company describes the water flow changes in graph form.  It uses previous releases to show the impact made on the New River in the past.  However, APCo cautions that the took does not forecast water releases.

On average, APCo says it takes about 14-and-a-half hours from a water release to reach Pembroke in Giles County.

"We're pleased to make this information available," said Frank Simms, hydro manager, in an APCo news release. "People should always practice safe boating practices and the water before heading out on the river. This tool, which is can easily be viewed on mobile electronic devices, is another way to help people be aware of potentially changing river conditions."
