North Carolina Rep. Howard Coble has undergone surgery at a Washington hospital for a hernia, and doctors call the procedure a success.
Coble chief of staff Ed McDonald said the doctor who performed the surgery Tuesday told him that he repaired a right-side hernia that was causing the pain for the 82-year-old Republican lawmaker.
McDonald said the surgeon told him there were no other concerns and that he expects Coble to make a complete recovery.
The 6th District lawmaker is expected to spend at least one night in the hospital, but McDonald added that the doctor told him that, given the congressman's age, they will wait until Wednesday before deciding whether to release him.
McDonald said the Republican 6th District lawmaker was scheduled to speak at a luncheon when he complained of abdominal pain before leaving for the event. He said Coble walked to the attending physician's office in the Capitol Building.
After he was examined, McDonald said it was determined that Coble should be taken to George Washington Hospital.
