New trial helps people with Emphysema breathe easier

Posted: Updated:

Roanoke, VA – Some people who suffer from emphysema are breathing easier thanks to the ASPIRE trial being held by Carilion Clinic.

Those who participate in the trial have a long tube inserted through their mouth and down into their lungs. Foam is then pushed through the tube, blocking off the airways to damaged portions of the lungs.

Doctors conducting the study are hopeful that this treatment could serve as an alternative to a lung transplant, or at least a means to prolong major surgery.

So far, both patients involved in the study have had good results.

One patient's lung function has already improved by 25%.
