Bees swarm Charlotte plane, keep it grounded for hours

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -

A swarm of bees kept a US Airways Express flight at the gate for hours at Charlotte Douglas International Airport Wednesday afternoon.

US Airways spokesman Davien Anderson said Flight 2690 to Indianapolis had boarded Wednesday afternoon and was ready for departure. Anderson said when the gate agent approached the tug, which pushes the airplane back from the gate, the agent noticed the bees.

The CRJ900 jet was scheduled to depart at 1:15 p.m.

Anderson said a beekeeper was summoned to the tug to remove the bees. The passengers remained on the aircraft.

The plane finally took off around 4 p.m., according to Charlotte Observer reporter Jim Utter, who was on the plane.
