Mixed opinions on allowing guns in bars

Posted: Updated:

Guns could soon be allowed inside North Carolina parks, college campuses and bars that serve alcohol.  Both chambers of the General Assembly have approved a bill expanding gun rights to concealed carry permit holders.  It now awaits Governor Pat McCrory's signature.

It's a bill that Player's Retreat owner Gus Gusler calls "ridiculous."

"It's a family place.  We have a lot of kids that come in here and I'm very concerned about mixing guns and alcohol," Gusler said.  "Common sense.  Any reasonable person who thinks: you don't take the chance of mixing guns and booze."

The bill outlaws those carrying guns into bars and restaurants from consuming alcohol.  Also, restaurant owners who don't want to serve them won't have to let them in.  Gusler says that's no guarantee that someone with a hidden gun won't come in, get drunk, and start trouble.

"One suggestion is to put a metal detector in," Gusler said.  "I don't want to do that.  That's a terrible way to set up a restaurant is have a metal detector."

Proponents of the bill say criminals are the problem, not licensed gun owners.

Inside Player's Retreat, some customers had mixed opinions.

"If it's in the hands of the right person it can be a safer thing," Brad Smith said. "But the problem is regulating it and keeping it out of the hands of the wrong people."

"Does it not open a door, a Pandora's box?" Steph Scribner said.
