WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -

St. Augustine's is picked second in the Southern Division and Shaw is picked third in the CIAA preseason predictions that came out Thursday.

The CIAA coaches discussed the upcoming season in Winston-Salem Thursday.

Winston-Salem State is picked first in the Southern Division, with St. Aug's second and Shaw third. Fayetteville State is picked fifth in the Southern.

Elizabeth City State is picked first in the Northern Division.

Overall, Winston-Salem State is the pick to win the league, with Elizabeth City State second and St. Aug's third.

St. Aug Head Coach Michael Costa said the preseason voting shows how much the program has evolved. Costa has coached the team since football was re-instituted at the university in 2002.

"It is a great accomplishment," said Costa, entering his 12th season as St. Aug Head Coach. "It shows we are respected as a program. We have accomplished a lot in 12 years."

The Falcons, 19-12 overall the past three seasons, are expected to be led by linebacker Chaz Robinson (Sr./Hampton, Va.) and defensive end Javarous Faulk (Sr./Macon, Ga.), who were named to the Preseason All-CIAA team at the event.

Kick returner Darnell Evans of Shaw also made the preseason all-conference team.
