Cary confirms first case of rabies for 2013

Posted: Updated:

The Town of Cary Animal Control officials said homeowner came in contact with a rabid fox on Thursday.

Officials said the homeowner was on the 1000 block of Valley stone Drive when contact with the animals was made. Cary Police responded and transported the dead animal for testing at the State Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh.

The results of the test came back positive Friday.

The homeowner is taking all necessary precautions since she was exposed to the rabid fox.

Authorities remind citizens to exercise caution when helping injured pets and to stay away from the bodily fluids from the animal, especially saliva. In North Carolina, it is state law to have your pets vaccinated against rabies. Seek help immediately if you or your pets are bitten by any animal, and notify officials as soon as possible.

If you suspect a rabid animal, or have a wild animal in your home, contact Cary Animal Control immediately at (919) 319-4517.
