2013 legislative session has deep impact on NC

Posted: Updated:

This legislative session may go down in the history books as having the most impact on the lives of North Carolinians.

David McLennan, a political science professor at William Peace University, said that impact was the driving force behind the 'Moral Monday' demonstrations and the protests from pro-choice advocates.

When asked how the public will look back on this session, McLennan said the response will be polarized. "I think for a lot of women, they're going to look back on this session and say ... a lot of our basic rights as women, health related, were taken away," McLennan said. "For social conservatives and for people in the religious communities, they're going to look on this session and say the legislature got it right."

The session produced changes in voter rights in the state along with tax reform and abortion restrictions.

McLennan believes Republicans will lose some key seats in the 2014 election, but not enough to lose their majorities.
