reporter addresses Hairston's problems - WSLS 10 NBC in Roanoke/Lynchburg Va reporter addresses Hairston's problems

Posted: Updated:

No one knows the North Carolina Tar Heels like beat reporter Greg Barnes, and Barnes spoke with WNCN's Penn Holderness on the P.J. Hairston issue Monday afternoon. Barnes' comments will appear in WNCN's shows.

Here is a transcript of the key points Barnes made:

"I think it's a sign of immaturity. I think that's the biggest takeaway.

"This is a young man, while his transgressions have not been as bad -- maybe -- as some people would like to make them out to be -- they're things you wouldn't want your child involved with -- but it's not the end of the world stuff, but he keeps doing it over and over.

"I think the biggest problem for P.J. right now is that Roy Williams went to bat for him, and he said, 'Look, we talked about suspending him, but I've decided not to suspend him. He's going to have some punishments, but we're going to let this thing play out.'

"And in a matter of weeks, PJ goes and gets pulled over going 93 miles per hour. And that just really looks bad on Roy Williams, I'm sure that's embarrassing to Roy, and being in Roy Williams' dog house is not something I'd recommend for any one.

"Before this weekend I would have said that [the end of P.J.'s UNC career] is not part of the discussion. But when you add this in, what you have here is repeated situations where he has not shown good judgment.

"As a leader of the team, in his position, he'd got to be smart about the way he handles things. ...

"I bet right now Roy Williams is probably thinking about kicking him off just because he's fuming. And I think that's one of the reasons he is going to wait before making a decision.

"Right now, given the information we have, he's probably only looking at a three- to five-game suspension unless something else comes up. This [speeding] is just another legal issue, another embarrassing issue for him and the program. Those kind of things build and they snowball and put him in the position where he's at now."
