Local marine bikes, raises money for mental illness research

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Raleigh native and marine is raising money for mental illness research by biking 406 miles.

Sean Keenan biked across Iowa to raise money for the Foundation of Hope, an organization that's based in Raleigh and conducts research for mental illness.

According to the North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research, there are 1.27 million people in the state that need some type of mental health service.

Keenan says he rode to support his fellow marines who are coping with PTSD.

"As a marine we never leave anyone on the battlefield and just because we come home from Iraq or Afghanistan doesn't mean the battlefield comes with us," he said.

Sean completed his ride this past weekend, but you can still donate money for the 25th Annual Walk for Hope that takes place on Sunday, Oct. 3.
