Alternative energy company expanding in Durham

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

A company in the Triangle is on the cutting edge of green energy technology. Earl Energy, based in Virginia Beach, has had an office in Durham since November 2012. Their hybrid energy is providing an energy alternative for marines in Afghanistan.

Since 2010, Ohio native Doug Moorehead has been at the helm of Earl Energy, and he is behind the Flexgen, a hybrid power system that uses lithium batteries and the solar panels to power off-site generators. It allows the generator to only use diesel fuel when the batteries recharge.

The company is a mix of brains and brawn. According to his bio, Moorehead is a former Navy SEAL who served in Iraq and the Persian Gulf. He also has an MIT degree and a Harvard MBA.

"Our very first system went to Afghanistan in 2011 and it's been working ever since,' says Moorehead.

Earl Energy opened an office in Durham nine months ago hoping to capture the best and brightest engineering minds in the Triangle. Ten people work at the Durham branch. The company has sold ten systems to the military, where Moorehead knows first hand, transporting fuel is more than an economic issue.

"There's the cost of human life. There's thousands of U.S. soldiers who have been killed on the battlefields moving fuel,' says Moorehead.

The veteran hopes his idea to provide hybrid energy to the military overseas will catch on commercially at home as well.
