Splash Valley attendance down

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE -

Splash Valley attendance numbers are down this year because of weather conditions.

The facility has had 15 rain days since they opened in May, closing at least half a day and sometimes a full day.

Scott Ramsburg with Roanoke County parks and recreation says overall attendance is down about 6000 people from last year at the same time. They've had about 34,000 visitors this year so far.

Splash Valley averages between 45 to 50,000 visitors each season.

Ramsburg says the good news is they are meeting daily operational costs so far and concession revenue is strong.

The water park will be open an extra week this year – August 23 to August 29-- and Ramsburg hopes that's when they'll make up for the lower attendance numbers.

"On days that we're closed we don't have the expense of the equipment running, the staff here, so while it's not ideal for the facility, it's still a loss in some ways, it could be a lot worse," said Ramsburg.

He says indoor pool usage maybe up this year. They've sold 2,000 day passes to the center over last year's number but once someone enters they can't tell if the person goes to the pool, wellness center or gym.

Early numbers from the fiscal year that ended June 30 show the Greenridge/Splash Valley complex recovered 100% of operational costs and made around $183,000 extra which will be reinvested into the facility.
