Piggly Wiggly opens in Southeast Roanoke

ROANOKE -

The pig is back in town and brought some goods with him. The new Piggly Wiggly opened in Roanoke after it closed down off of Salem Avenue in the 1920s.

It was a busy morning as people got free hot dogs and shopped inside the store. For some people, it was their first time inside a Piggly Wiggly.

The mayor, David Bowers, with help with some kids and other city representatives cut the ribbon to mark the grand opening in Southeast Roanoke. It was previously the IGA Super Save on Riverland Road near Garden City.

Store managers say they're hoping this new addition will help revitalize and bring more jobs to the area.

"We wanted something to kind of revive the area kind of something new do something fresh," says Chad Burdette, store manager. "I think Piggly Wiggly fits that bill. Its been great. Its been well received. Everybody digs the pig."

This is something that means a lot to Burdette. His wife's parents owned the store that became Piggly Wiggly for 23 years. It's the same place he worked as a teenager.

The first Piggly Wiggly opened in 1916 in Memphis, Tn. and now there are about 600 of them.
