Chapel Hill flood bill: $400,000

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

The work continues in Chapel Hill as crews clean up from the stunning floods a month ago.

Town Hall was among the facilities impacted, as was the Airport Gardens neighborhood.

Families have been given hotel rooms to stay in while crews repair mold damage. That work could take another month.

A total of 18 of the 26 apartments were damaged as five inches of rain fell in just a few hours.

At Town Hall, rain damaged drywall, carpeting, office space and the Council chambers. The first floor of Chapel Hill Town Hall at 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. will be closed for six months to one year to repair damage, the city said.

"It is City Hall and it is very disruptive to the people's business. It's disruptive to town staff. It makes it a little difficult on us but we can work around it. We just ask for everyone's patience over the next six months while we work this out," said Fire Chief Dan Jones.

Town Manager Roger L. Stancil said the city is looking into why the flooding happened so it can be better prepared in the future.

Estimated costs for clean-up and construction may exceed $400,000 for the Town Hall repair.
