I-64 Alleghany County tractor trailer crash blamed on medical problem

Posted: Updated:

Virginia State Police say the driver of a tractor trailer that crashed on Interstate 64 in Alleghany County on Wednesday, complained of stomach pains before the accident.

According to Sergeant Robert Carpentieri, of State Police's Salem Division, says the crash took place around 11:45 a.m., about 15 miles west of Lexington, in the westbound lanes.

The investigating trooper found 49-year-old Richard Thomas Burke, of Star Valley, Arizona, was having stomach pains and had tried to pull off the highway to the shoulder.

However, the 2012 Volvo tractor trailer ran off the road, and flipped on its right side.

The investigating trooper also found Burket was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Rescue crews had to cut out 41-year-old Christina Dawn Wheeler, of Indiana, who was riding in the passenger side.

The truck had 40,000 pounds of soy milk as its cargo.  The tractor portion is a total loss.

Sgt. Carpentieri said the crash shout down both westbound lanes of I-64 for about 45 minutes.

The investigation is ongoing.
