DOWNTOWN ROANOKE, VA -

This weekend is the perfect time to get your back to school shopping done. From notebooks to pens, clothes and even new shoes, parents can get al the essentials tax free in the state of Virginia.

Its all in part to Virginia's tax free holiday for back to school shoppers.

Not only does the sales tax holiday help shoppers, it also gives businesses a boost., without the expense of advertising or cutting prices.

Donna Bollinger, the owner of Native Grace, a small shop in downtown Roanoke that specializes in fair-trade clothing and accessories says this weekend is a unique time that benefits businesses.

"This is interesting for us too because the discount isn't just coming from our revenue but actually the state," Bollinger said.

Bollinger says it's a win-win for small businesses and customers, whether they are back to school shopping or not.

"As a small business owner and for our customers it's just a nice time to purchase those items that you might need to purchase anyway," Bollinger said. "But its just getting more of an incentive to do it."

The holiday starts midnight on Friday and runs through midnight on Sunday. The tax applies on school supplies $20 or less and clothing and shoes $100 or less.
