Charlottesville tuberculosis case sparks shelter tests

Posted: Updated:

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - About 100 people at a shelter in Charlottesville will be tested for tuberculosis after one case was confirmed.

Thomas Jefferson Health District director Dr. Lilian Peake says there's no risk to the public.

"To be truly high risk, you would have needed 25 to 50 hours of exposure time," Peake told The Daily Progress (http://bit.ly/12I1Qdi ).

Testing will begin at The Haven in downtown Charlottesville on Aug. 16 and will continue through early September.

Guests at the shelter will be tested for both active and latent tuberculosis. Latent tuberculosis does not display any symptoms and cannot be spread from person to person.

Health officials wouldn't comment on the condition of the individual who tested positive for active tuberculosis.

Haven staff said workers are posting signs describing the situation and are informing guests in person who need to be tested .

The shelter serves the homeless and the very poor. Its services include short-term storage, showers, laundry facilities, computer access, financial literacy and counseling, legal assistance and overnight shelter.
