Roanoke building permit numbers, value up

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE, VA -

Second Presbyterian Church in Roanoke is adding on and connecting two existing buildings.

"We're not seeing so much of the new construction as we are additions and remodels," said Martha Chester the president of Hughes Associates Architects and Engineers who is working on the project. "I think people are starting to feel more comfortable about the economy. They're beginning to go ahead with projects that they had put on hold."

Chester says architects are usually a good gauge of how well the building industry is doing because when the economy slows down their business suffers first.

"We had a significant increase in the activity of construction," said Jeff Shawver, the Roanoke City building commissioner.

Here are the facts:

-Roanoke city says the number of building permits is up over the last fiscal year.
-Roanoke building permits more than a 53% increase in value from FY 2012 to FY 2013.

FY 2012: 4,038 permits issued / $101 million

FY 2013: 4,234 / $155 million

"Everybody has a stake in this thing from contracting to suppliers to the tradespeople. It means a lot more work and it provides jobs and economically it's great for the whole region," said Shawver.

Chester says recent billing is back to what it was a few years ago although the number of projects remain about the same. Encouraging news she hopes continues.
